Khel Mandala (The game is set…)

The song (YouTube link): Khel Mandala
Tujhya paayarishi kuni saan thor nhai
Saad sunya kaaljachi tujhya kaani jaai
All are equal at your doorstep...
Only you can listen to the elegy of a lonely heart
Hey.. Tari deva sara na yo bhog kasha pai
Haravali waat disha andharalya dhaai
Then why doesn't the suffering end, my Lord?
The path is lost, darkness engulfs all directions..
Bavaaloon udhalato jeev maaya baapaa
Vanvaayo oori petla...
Fear grips and ravages me, O father…
There is a forest-fire raging in my heart
Khel Mandala, Khel Mandala…
khel mandala, Deva… Khel Mandala!
The game is set, O Lord, the game is set...
Sandaliga reetbhat ghetla vasa tujha
Tuch vaat dakhiv ga khel mandala
Daavi deva pail paar paathishi tu raha ubha
Yo tujhyach umbaryat khel mandala
We have forsaken all traditions and took your oath
You have to show us the way, for the game is now set..
Stand by us in all circumstances, O God...
For we have set the game in your courtyard...

Hey… Usavala ganagot saara, Aadhar kunacha nhai
Bhegaalalya bhooi pari jeena angaar jeevala jaali
The fabric of my relationships is all unwoven, there is no one I can rely on...
Flaming hot coals burn my body, as if the sun scalds the barren cracked earth
Bala de zhunjaayala kirpechi dhaal de
Inaveeti pancha praan, jeevarhat taal de
Give me the strength to fight, and the shield of compassion…
I ask for mercy, please give me the rhythm of your soul
Karapala raan deva, Jalala shivaar
tari nhai dheer sandala... Khel mandala...
The forest has burnt to ashes, and the farm is ablaze...
Even then I haven't lost hope, my Lord, for the game is set...

Me too! It plays in my head all the time.. Especially the end music where Sonali dances like crazy...

Bloody brilliant job mate. Was looking for this all over the place, a translation to Guru Thakur's sumptuous words. Excellent job.

Do you by any chance have the lyrics (not transalations) to the rest of the songs of this great movie especially Apsara Aali , Natrang Ubha & Wajle ki bara?

Well done again!

S.Wagh said...

Thanks Alok. I jotted down the lyrics myself after listening to the song. In case, I get time to work on the others, I will let you know...

That would be great. Thanks mate.

This is one of the best meaningful marathi song i ever heard.

Troubled one can set as pray to god this song.

Nice emotional touchy voice from Ajay ..i think god may also impress with such heartquenching words in it.

Thanks for posting the lyrics.. I had got a few words wrong..:) and amazing translation too.. Keep up the good work!!

Radz said...

One little correction if you don't mind..
Sandali ga reet bhat, not waaj...

S.Wagh said...

Hi Curious81,
I was doubtful of that too, since why would one say reet bhat unless u r refering to 'akshata' as reet bhat.. then i thought may be it is "reeti riwaaj" in short as "reet waaj"... if u r sure it is bhat, i will change it...

This is Curious81.

Yes, am sure its reet bhat, its like we say in marathi "kahi reetbhat nahi hya mansala"

although i liked your logic, reet waaj short for reeti riwaaj..:)

Hi Friend, Thanks for the great translation. I have only one suggestion. "Gana got" means the net of all the relatives and family supporters. "Usavala gang got" means the net of the relatives & family supporters is torn"

Mr. Wagh, fantastic work with the Translation.

Here is my humble version of this fantastic song. Written in a format which is easy to understand by all the people of this generation whose life revolves around e-mails and networking sites.

Dear God,

Nobody is rich or poor or big or small at your feet and all our worries reaches your ear. You treat everyone with love and compassion but why have you given me this anguish and agony? I agree that I am lost and there is darkness in the direction I want to go. There is also fear and apprehension raging in me like how a fire rages in a forest. But, you are like my Father, please guide me through this journey as the stage is set and I am ready to pursue my acting career.

We have shed our customs and rituals and taken an oath serve you forever. The stage is set in your courtyard itself and we are solely relying on you to help us perform. I have been rejected by my family and discouraged by my friends and do not have anyone to support me. My body is burning with sorrow just like how this parched land burns with the Sun’s wrath. Give me the strength to fight this fire which is raging inside me and give me the rhythm of acting to my soul.

Even though this fire has destroyed my life and burnt down my farm, I have not lost hope in you. The stage is set, I am ready to begin my acting career, please help me in overcoming these hurdles and to convert this dream into reality.

Regards,
Gunvantrao Kagalkar

Beautiful, Being a non-marathi yet from Maharashtra, I kept listening this song almost daily. Never knew this song has so much depth until one fine day I asked my wife (marathi mulgi). She though translated but yet left with no deep understanding.

I got it here! Awesome!

Something connects though this song! Beautiful lyrics, composition as always by AA - my fav.

Touched my soul, it fits perfectly into the phase of life I am in right now,the song gives me strength. At first I didn't understood the meaning but the tune itself was magnetic, when learned the meaning, one thing I understood that sometimes we don't need a particular language to call God.

Thanks so much for adding the meaning - I am a Thamizh speaking Indian American, but the lyrics of this song, the way Ajay sang this all melt my heart!!! Just a wish - I really think it will be great if someone can add the right phonetics in English so we can learn to pronounce this amazing language Maraathi!!!

True, extremely meaningful and soulful!
